Catherine Thompson BBus MBus GAICD MIML Business Director- Specialist Ships, Maritime Systems Division

Catherine began her employment in the Public Service with the Department of Defence –Materiel Organisation in 2005 working in the Aerospace Materiel Branch.  Catherine was engaged in a variety of roles covering commercial, contracting and procurement, financial, human resources and governance of capability materiel acquisition and asset sustainment projects.

After her role with Aerospace, Catherine moved into the Chief Finance Officer Directorate as part of a Financial Governance team to substantiate the accuracy of balances and adverse findings on the financial statements for DMO and Defence. Working as a part of a team with short turnaround times, critically analysing DMO and Defence’s balances, conducting audits, compiling artefacts and presenting the findings to the Australian National Audit Office (ANAO),

Later, Catherine moved into the Contracting and Procurement Branch, where she was involved in 35 Explosive Ordnance projects. During this time, Catherine led and managed a small team providing subject matter expertise, contractual and procurement advice in relation to Defence Capability acquisition and Sustainment Projects, Processes and Policy.

Broadening her experience within the Department, Catherine moved into the Capability and Sustainment Group within Maritime Systems Division as the Executive Director for Specialist Ships. Catherine now provides strategic support to the Branch Head and the four associated Systems Program Offices (SPO) for Patrol Boats, Hydrographic ships, Mine Warfare ships and Clearance Diving area, as well as the Pacific Patrol Boats. Catherine leads a team who supports the Branch in strategy Development, planning, program governance (including financial, and workforce), risk, WH&S, communications, and quality management using best practice approaches.

Catherine’s academic and professional development includes a Bachelor of Business, Masters of Business Management, Graduate and member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Member of the Institute of Managers and Leaders, and a Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment.
